REGIS RALLY - Saturday 12th October 2002

Jim Deacon and Dave Wilson win again

Jim Deacon and Dave Wilson maintained their superiority by winning the Regis Rally for the second year running in their Mk I Lotus Cortina, by over a minute from the Volvo Amazon of Dave Hughes and Andy Gibson.

Bognor Regis Motor Club's tenth running of the historic Regis Rally attracted nearly 60 crews to the start at Fontwell Racecourse and the route took in 120 miles of West Sussex and Hampshire lanes with eleven special tests at various venues en route.

The first pre-plotted regularity section had a sting in the tail; the route turned into the Goodwood House grounds and finished at the top of the Hillclimb course, after cramming three intermediate controls into just over a mile of private road. Ted Manktelow's Escort was best here, keeping its total regularity section penalties down to only 12 seconds.

The next regularity was plot-and-bash, but despite being straightforward tulips and spot heights it caused many crews a few problems. Not for Deacon/Wilson however, who dropped only 6 seconds over 5 intermediate controls. Top Classic Challenge contenders Peter Noad and Peter Cox in the Audi lost any chance of a good score from the Regis, navigational problems on this regularity resigning them to a 30th place finish.

Further regularity sections in the afternoon, again the first pre-plotted and the next plot-and-bash, kept navigators busy and several crews reported being delayed by deliberately obstructive tractor drivers in the narrow lanes.  Then the final short regularity went back down the Goodwood Hillclimb with another succession of closely spaced controls. This time more crews were prepared.

It was good to see Geoff Twigg back in action and recovering from his recent serious illness, and also driving his Renault Alpine.  Unfortunately navigational errors by Graham Carter cost them a high placing but Geoff was a worthy winner of the "Spirit of the Rally" award.

David and Paul Clifford were Best Novice Crew, finishing 18th overall in their beautiful BMW CSL.  Brod Purdy/Eric Richardson could only manage 36th place, but their Hillman Imp won the trophy for the Best Prepared Car.

Colin Hewitt and Andrew Swann were delighted with their highest ever placing of third, while Dominic Worsfold / Matt Fowle did very well to bring home a borrowed Mini in 5th place, following a panic to replace the windscreen that shattered on the way to the start.

An 8th place finish by Peter Goldsbrough & Steve Freeman in the pretty Alpine A110 has now put Peter into the lead in the Classic Challenge, ahead of previous leader Robert Taylor.  The Classic Challenge will be finalised at the Palladwr Rally on November 3rd and if you study the scores you'll see that any of the top 6 drivers still have a chance of winning the Challenge.

28th TARGA RUSTICANA - 31st August 2002

Worth Birkill and Dave Harris convincingly won the 28th Targa Rusticana in their Morris Mini by over 8 minutes from the second placed crew of Jim Deacon and Dave Wilson in a Lotus Cortina. Peter Horsburgh and Alistair Bell brought their Mini home third, despite incurring a wrong test penalty and missing a passage control on a tricky loop through a farmyard.

The 11th round of the 2002 HRCR Historic Road Rally Championship on Saturday 31st August had 65 starters and was based at the Builth Wells Showground where 12 of the 15 special tests were run. Clerk of the Course Peter Rushforth devised an excellent road route on maps 136 and 147 with simple but clever navigation to trap the unwary.

Fastest on the tests was Birkill, by the incredible margin of a minute and a half from autotesters Peter Noad and John Larkin who were closely followed up by David Pengilly in his MGB.  But the event's handicap formula put Peter Baker's 1955 Lancia Appia only 4 seconds behind Birkill on test penalties and Wesley Massam's Volvo PV third.

The five regularity sections challenged competitors with "Benularity" and "Deeliarity" variations. One regularity section used 18 miles of loose surfaced roads in Hafren Forest, navigating from the OS map, where many crews missed a codeboard on a tricky loop. Cutting a hairpin turn in a section through a farm field in an attempt to pass Massam's Volvo, Peter Baker bogged down the little Lancia in a patch of rather unpleasant substance and was sportingly towed out by the oldest car in the rally, David Moore's 1935 Brough Superior.

The final regularity section, using the Deeliarity tulip roadbook which gave no distance information, was the downfall of many crews. The Renault Alpine A110 of Peter Goldsbrough/Graham Carter was second placed at the lunch halt but dropped to 13th after making a turn at the wrong signpost. Then a disagreement between father and son, Paul and Matthew Heal in their MGBGT over another signposted junction (the 16 year-old navigator was proved to be right) lost them their chance of claiming the second spot and they settled for 6th.

St WILFRIDS ROAD RALLY - 3rd/4th August 2002

"First Terry Pickering, second Peter Noad" has now become the championship order for the third round in succession.  This time it was Ripon MSC's St Wilfrids Rally, a round of the Nocturnal Challenge on 3rd/4th August that produced those consistant placings, when just nine championship crews made the trek to North Yorkshire to join 32 moderns in a 130-mile night rally.

Plot and bash route cards made navigators work hard, but for those that took their time to plot there was ample opportunity to recover lateness.  With numerous code boards to be found, many around tricky grass triangles, coupled with treacherous fog on the higher ground, all crews found themselves loosing time on the competitive timed-to-the-second sections.

LEUKAEMIA HISTORIC RALLY

The Leukaemia Historic Rally on Sunday 23rd June featured in the championship for the first time and fielded a good number of contenders looking for Premier Challenge or Classic Challenge points.  Navigators were surprised to receive the entire route, including the regularity sections, on marked maps at the start - nobody could complain about difficult navigation on this one!
Although billed as a drivers' event, with numerous special tests, the first six tests in the Cwmcarn forest complex were spoilt by having to note codeboards (car number plates) on the tests, which were not positioned for easy spotting.  Many crews collected several 30 minute penalties for missed boards, after driving past without seeing them, and this was the overwhelming deciding factor for the results.  With the urgency to record a fast time on the test, it was difficult to make a decision whether or not to reverse back to look for a code board (a possibly dangerous manoeuvre with the next car approaching), which in some cases was not there anyway.

None of the leading Premier Challenge contenders fared well in the results.  Len Olds (Still leading the Challenge) with Andy Ballantyne in the TR4 was 16th, Dave Hughes/Richard Dix came 8th and Brian Cope/Paul Doe were 12th.  Of those that did find all the codeboards, John Pascoe and last-minute navigator Mark Robinson, in the familiar red Volvo Amazon, took the outright win, John's first win in 40 years of rallying!  Making it a Volvo 1-2, in second place came novice crew Andi Crellin and Mark Kelly in their PV.  Best of those with just one code board penalty were Worth Birkill and Mark Appleton in 6th, followed by Paul & Matthew Heal in 7th place.

Notable Retirements were George Alexander / Terry Dunn who retired the Mini at the Coffee Stop with a cracked sump.   Peter Noad / Peter Cox retired on Test 13 with a failed CV Joint on the Audi 80GT.  Martin Shaw / Andy Gibson suffered ignition failure on test 3 and had to cut tests 4, 5 and 6, collecting many hours of code board penalties!, then they retired the Healey on the finish line of the last test with total loss of brakes.

A 5th place for Ted and Judy Howles in the Inca Trail Scimitar elevated Ted to the lead in the Classic Challenge, and Judy into second place behind Richard Dix who also leads the Premier Challenge Navigators.  Next in the Classic Challenge, only 3 points down on Ted & Judy,  are Bob and Jeanne Taylor in their red Mini.

In the Newcomers Challenge, the unlikely Land Rover of Pam Butterworth and Shon Gosling is now running second to Wes Massam and Bernard Northmore, while Wes and Bernard also still hold the HERO Challenge lead from another Volvo PV crew, Keith Wilson and Dave Cooper.

ALAN ROGERS HISTORIC ROAD RALLY

The first round of the HRCR Classic Challenge and the second round of the Premier Challenge, the Alan Rogers' Historic Road Rally on 7th April, lived up to its old reputation of providing a tough test for the navigators.  But overcoming this to take a very well deserved first ever win were Gill and Richard Dix in their MG Midget, by a margin of over 100 seconds from Len Olds and Ryan Pickering in the TR4.

Dave Keen and Andy Berry in their Mini Clubman were leading the field up to the final regularity section, but a missed control dropped them well out of contention.  Only 13 crews from the 52 starters in the Dorchester-based rally escaped without any 30 minute penalties for missing regularity controls, and this included just three novice crews who were given the benefit of easier route instructions for the afternoon plot-and-bash regularity sections.  Best Novices Paul and Alison Simmonds couldn't believe that they had finished 4th overall and second novices Emma and Rob Henchoz came in 9th.

With just five special tests all completed within the first hour of the rally, the emphasis was then on performance over four long regularity sections.  The downfall of most crews came in the last section which included ten 25 metre radius avoid points, all eight figure grid references.  All the plots fell very close to junctions and extreme plotting accuracy was crucial to defining the correct route, something that's not at all easy on the move. Navigators who were using the very latest issues of the OS maps (those with the green A roads) were also struggling to determine details that had been obliterated by the overprinted cycle route markings.

The next single day road rally in the HRCR championship, the Hughes Rally on 26th May, promises a much easier time for the navigators, but in the meantime there's the Welsh Retro and the East Anglian Classic for those that also enjoy night rallying.

POWDERHAM HISTORIC RALLY OF DEVON

After the disappointment of having to cancel the 2001 event only days before it was due to run, Torbay Motor Club came back with an excellent rally on 9/10 March 2002, to open the HRCR Premier Challenge.  Throughout the weekend, which included 4 regularity sections, 25 special tests and a two hour competitive night section, the lead changed several times, but the eventual victory went to the MGB GT crew, Paul Heal claiming his first rally win.

Peter & Mike Valentine had an excellent run in Round 1 of the Nocturnal Challenge, cleaning all except the initial regularity section, and were second overall when combined with the modern event.  It was a tough 200 mile rally using a lot of loose forest roads as well as the military roads of Eppynt, borne out by the fact that only 50% of the starters qualified as finishers.  Notable retirements were Dave Hughes & Richard Dix, whose Volvo broke its diff ascending the Devil's Staircase and Ian Crammond & Peter Ward who put their Mercedes off into a bog.
