HRCR Champion Driver 2003 - TERRY PICKERING

Seven outright wins from 11 starts on Championship rounds in 2003 - Quite a performance! And five of those wins were consecutive rounds - a record that's unlikely to ever be beaten.

Terry's wins came on The Carpetbagger, Welsh Retro, East Anglian Classic, Tour of Anglesey, AB Motorsport, Ross Traders and the Regis. And to think that less than 4 years ago Terry and his wife Sue came along to one of our Beginners Rally School days to find out what historic rallying was all about.

Driving a 1956 Triumph TR3, Terry has also won the HERO Challenge for pre-1960 Cars , with the maximum possible score. The TR was mostly navigated by Paul Robinson in 2003, with Anthony Preston and Matt Fowle guiding Terry to the wins on the Ross Traders and Regis.

HRCR Champion Navigator 2003 - DAVE WILSON

Although usually seen alongside Jim Deacon in the Lotus Cortina or RS2000, Dave started 2003 with an outright win on the Isca Historicus in Paul Simmonds' Cortina. High scores in Keith Colman's Alpine on the Welsh Retro and Nigel Dinsdale's Cortina on the Targa Rusticana assisted in securing Dave's Championship victory.

Dave could have also topped the Clubmans Challenge table but suffered mixed fortunes; he saved the day by pushing Jim's Escort to the finish of the Ross Traders after the gearbox failed on the final tests, but then lost a certain victory on the Regis when he & Jim were excluded for a Give Way infringement.

Clubmans Challenge Driver - BOB TAYLOR

The Mini of Bob and Jeanne Taylor has been a familiar sight on championship rounds for a while now. They started the year with some excellent results; 4th on the Isca Historicus and 2nd on the Ilkley Jubilee. Then later in the year came a 4th on the Targa and they would have won the Hughes had several leading crews not been successful in getting a section cancelled.

Clubmans Challenge Navigator - RICHARD DIX

2002 Champion Navigator Richard Dix still primarily competes with Dave Hughes in the Volvo, and their best result of 2003 was second overall on the Classic Illuminations.

On Clubmans Challenge rounds, Richard took seats in a variety of cars, although none with wife Gill who was taking a year away from rallying. Consistent results put Richard nine points ahead of Jeanne Taylor for the Clubmans Challenge Navigator title. Richard's best result in the 2003 Clubmans Challenge was second overall on the Palladwr Rally.

Nocturnal Challenge - ROGER HUNT & GRAHAM DANCE

Roger & Graham made a late start scoring points for the Nocturnal Challenge, through being the organisers of the first round, the Carpetbagger. Then on subsequent rounds they were plagued by punctures, so had to wait until the very last round to claim the Challenge awards. With Terry Pickering confirmed as winner of the Premier Challenge, the Nocturnal Challenge was theirs for the taking and they demonstrated their prowess with an impressive win of the Ilfracombe Historic.

They had been hoping for some good competition for the Mexico Challenge , but with no serious opposition are walking away with the Mexico Challenge awards as well.

Newcomers Challenge - VAL & GRAHAM GILMORE

After several years competing in their MGB, Val & Graham aquired the ex-Simon Rossiter MG1300 'Basil' and have come good by winning the Newcomers Challenge, so now move up to compete with the Experts.

They only competed in six rounds, just choosing single day events, but the Gilmores finished top Newcomers Challenge crew in four of them.

HERO Challenge Navigator - SHON GOSLING

Navigating Pam Butterworth's Wolseley 1500 on the daytime rounds and various other cars on the night events, Shon gets a Gold Star for attendance - he competed in all but one of the 16 Championship rounds in 2003.

Shon's best result was a 3rd overall on the St Wilfrids, in Wes Massam's Volvo and he finished the HERO Challenge only 5 points down on the maximum score.
